WHO WE ARE
Cultural Diversity through Self-Expression
Rooted in the music and dance of the African diaspora.
Our culture program is design to preserve and teach the East African culture and their heritage to the children and pass them along to the next generation.
There’s a chance of identity lost among our children if we don’t teach them and connect them with their roots.
As a part of the culture program, we teach children traditional dance, language & culture classes where they get to learn the History of Africa and cooking classes, where they get to learn to cook East African food.

Our Programs

1
Youth Programs
We adore African drumming and dancing for its celebration of cultural diversity and empowerment through self-expression. We believe in its transformative power for every child. In our cultural program, we teach youth traditional African dance, drumming, language, and history, alongside cooking classes where they learn to cook and savor African cuisine. We harness folkloric dance for healing and stress relief, especially for women and youth.
Performance-wise, traditional dances grace festivals, cultural gatherings, and community events, accompanied by the rhythmic beats of traditional music that often narrate stories or are purely instrumental.
2
ADULT FOLKLORIC DANCE & DRUMMING
Folk dance celebrates the cultural heritage of specific communities, often performed at social gatherings for entertainment and ritualistic purposes. Some folk dances narrate foundational stories of a culture, while others simply reflect cultural pride.
At Ubumwe Culture & Heritage, we utilize folk dance, music, and drumming as avenues for people to express, share, and connect with their traditional cultures and each other.
Dancers typically adorn themselves in traditional attire, enhancing their cultural identity and fostering unity within the folk dance group.

Mission and Vision
Get to Know Us
The Ubumwe East Africa was created by Divine Mutesi with a mission to bring African people together to preserve their cultures, and to pass them along to the next generation.
She envisioned Ubumwe supporting cultural preservation for years to come.

African Drumming Class
Drumming is great for co-ordination, concentration, memory, focus, team work, and self expression. We provide drums for each student to play and build skills like sharing, responsibility, and teamwork through jamming together. We are flexible to teach any size group, but the ideal group size for drumming class is 15 or less. Students will say poetry, play rhythms from East African and learn about the ethnic groups, history, purpose, and cultural context of the music.
